People who like pets tend to be very kind, so it makes sense that they sometimes can’t help but share their favorite foods with their dogs. As a dog owner, it’s your job to make sure your dog is healthy and happy.
Along with making sure he eats a healthy, balanced diet, you should also make sure he doesn’t eat the wrong food. People often believe that the food we eat is good and healthy for our dogs as well. Don’t ever feed your dog a lot of human food. There are many “human” foods that could be dangerous, so we need to be extra careful. Not just because it will make them fat but also because some foods that humans eat are poisonous to dogs.
Some of these common foods may surprise you.
Chocolate
No, chocolate should never be given to a dog. Methylxanthines are found in chocolate. These are stimulants that can stop a dog’s metabolism. Even a little bit of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can make you throw up and have diarrhea. A high dose can cause seizures, changes in the way the heart works, and even death.
Caffeine
It has a stimulant in it that is bad for dogs. Even though you might like a cup of coffee in the morning, your dog should just drink water.
Macadamia Nuts
Even though it might be one of your favorite nuts, don’t give it to your pets. Even though no one knows for sure what it is about these nuts that kill dogs, the fact is that they do.
Raisins and grapes
If you give your pet this food, whether it’s fresh or dried, it seems harmless and healthy, but it can cause kidney failure in dogs. Don’t do it!
Avocados
Really? Even though this fruit is good for people and can be eaten with almost anything, it is not good for puppies. It has a person, which is a chemical found in avocados that can hurt your dog in large amounts.
Salt
A little bit of salt is fine, but too much salt can cause dogs to lose water and could even cause them to get too much sodium. When dogs eat too much salt, they may have more thirst or urinate more often. They may also vomit, have diarrhea, get a fever, or have seizures.
Garlic and onions
When eaten in large amounts, both of these ingredients can hurt a dog’s red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. But toxicity can happen if you take a large amount or a lot of small ones. Some of the signs may be feeling weak, throwing up, having trouble breathing, and losing your hunger.
But just like different foods have different effects on different people, the same is true for dogs. Signs of poisoning or an allergic reaction include vomiting, shaky muscles, fever, intense itching, limb weakness, diarrhea, trouble breathing, and feeling tired. If any of these things occur to your dog, take him to the vet immediately.
