Because She Can: Where Art, Purpose, and Women’s Wellness Meet

At a creative workshop by MSD Philippines, participants reflect on wellness, preventive care, and the importance of prioritizing their own health.

April 10, 2026 —For many women, taking time for themselves often comes last—after work deadlines, family needs, and everyday responsibilities. A recent gathering aimed to change that, even just for an afternoon.

Organized by MSD Philippines through its Guard Against HPV campaign, “Because She Can” brought together mothers, professionals, and young women for a session that combined a mug-making workshop with conversations on health and self-care.

The activity was simple: participants designed and painted their own mugs. But the setting allowed for something less common—time to pause. As the session went on, conversations shifted from daily routines to the realities many women face, including balancing multiple roles and often setting aside their own well-being.

“Women often carry many responsibilities—at work, at home, and within their communities,” said Dr. Mary Ann Galang-Escalona, Country Medical Lead of MSD Philippines. “In the process of caring for others, it’s easy to overlook one’s own well-being. But protecting one’s health is essential to continuing to show up for the people and the goals that matter.”

Beyond the workshop, the event opened discussions on preventive health, including awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable cancers, particularly with proper information, screening, and timely intervention. However, gaps in awareness continue to affect many women.

Health experts at the event underscored the importance of early awareness and informed decision-making. Understanding risk factors and available preventive measures, they noted, can help women take a more proactive role in their health—not only for themselves, but also for their families.

The session also framed preventive care as part of everyday self-care, alongside rest and maintaining balance in daily life.

By the end of the activity, participants left with mugs they had made themselves—small but personal reminders to make space for their own well-being.
